Corporate gifts – part of business culture

With an increasing level of business involving the Asian region, it is important for Australian companies to be aware of some business-related cultural differences, in particular, the significance of gift giving.

Gift giving or ‘gifting’ may not be a norm when conducting business in Australia, however, when one deals with Asian customers, gifting can improve a business relationship and this is considered a normal part of doing business.

If you lack ideas on the type of gifts, you can consider gifting of Australian items, such as Aboriginal art design, quality food or wine. These would be construed as cultural relationship building.

It is recommended to undertake some research to help understand the particular cultural situation you are entering as not all Asian cultures are alike. Make sure that you present a culturally appropriate gift as inappropriate gifts may sour the relationship instead.
